Norpro Grip EZ Stainless Steel Compost KeeperReviewsThis item is a good size and looks fine. But that's about all I can say good about it. The filter makes it smell like dead fish! After only one use! You might as well buy any air tight kitchen anister and use it the same way. If you don't want smell, you have to empty it every day. But even after washing it out with soapy water, it still stinks because the filter retains the fish-like smell even when it's practically new. Waste of $$. buy any old container to use for food waste! It's just perfect! Holds a ton of compostable kitchen waste, easy to clean, attractive and the filter really blocks odors. I'd buy it again in a minute. Just sorry that a waited so long to "splurge". I have used the Norpro Grip EZ compost keeper for about two weeks. So far it has performed well. The cannister is attractive enough that I don't mind if it is left out on the kitchen counter. I have left kitchen waste in the cannister for up to three days before putting it into the compost bin and I have detected no odors at all. This is a very good alternative to a pail under the sink! If I had to rate this on my own, I'd give it four stars. My wife would give it two, which was not unexpected. Depending on your needs, our issues might not be issues for you, but size and shape are the big limitations. Oval shaped containers allow you to hold dinner plates over the opening and scrape a plate clean. This one's smaller round opening can make for a potential messier situation unless you are more diligent. I didn't expect any similar item to be able to hold everything compostable such as grease stained pizza boxes, but it would have been nicer not to need to empty this every day or two. For a family of five that composts (or has the city do it for us) whatever we can, it would be nice to have something bigger. But overall, it's nice to have something that looks like it belongs on the counter, and looks good overall. Unfortunately, it keeps getting filled up all the way to the filter. I've never been able to find a perfect solution, and this was good enough that I was able to sway the household vote toward keeping it. Back in our early days of composting, when the city first started giving subsidized compost/worm bins, this might have been handy and large enough since we did not compost rotting fruits, meats or anything that attracted flies. When the city introduced curb side food waste recycling, they gave us a smallish plastic pail to use on a day-to-day basis and then empty into the larger green bin for pickup. Their free plastic one was a better shape than this, but a big mess. This one is easy to clean, (if you've cleaned stainless pots and pans, you know it's relatively easy, plus nothing gets baked on this so it's even easier) keeps odors out, and closes better than the one the city gave us. The free one didn't last more than a few months before we got sick of it. A large paper bag was a better fit for volume, but a bad way to prevent fruit flies. Experience has shown me that the more you can reclaim, the more you will find there is to reclaim, but if the size were adequate, then the shape would be my only misgiving. Overall, there's nothing on the market that I can find that I like better, and I still think it deserves four stars even though I am the one who has to empty it. This countertop compost keeper is sleek-looking and definitely odor-free to the human nose. I was enjoying it immensely until I started seeing fruit flies in my kitchen. It takes us a couple of weeks to fill the compost keeper and during that time hundreds and hundreds of fruit flies had made it their home. I was so disgusted, I through the whole thing in the garbage. Average Rating:![]() |

Pyrex Storage 14-Piece Round Set, Clear with Blue LidsReviewsI recently ordered these, and am generally pleased with them. However, the box description claims that these bowls nest, but do that at your own risk. I nested two of the 2-cup size together, they got wedged, I tried gently to get them apart and some shards of glass chipped off the lip of one of them even with just gentle pressure. Pyrex customer service was extremely helpful and shipped out two replacement bowls right away. The rep said that they recommend stacking with the lids on (of course, the word "nest" on their box implies that you don't need to do this), which is what I'll do from now on. So, I still recommend the product, just don't try to nest bowls of the same size together. I love Pyrex everything! We are trying to get away from the use of so much plastic and disposables, so I purchased this set for home storage and for carrying our lunch to work. These are great! The lids seal tightly and we've had no leaks. I would advise against stacking these together though: I did have two get stuck and one of them chipped slightly getting them apart. I store them with the lids on to prevent this from happening again. I also love that these are American Made! I will be purchasing more sets of these. Pyrex is absolutely great. I got these on super sale.....but I would have definitely paid more. The lids seal very tight and will even hold in liquids which is great. Have gone through the dishwasher a few times now and there is no apparent wear at all. Love em and will be buying more in the future. Bought these to avoid heating plastic boxes in the microwave. The containers are of varied sizes to store different quantities of food in. They are very easy to wash. Initially the lids were a tad too tight. But with a few uses the fit has improved. I love this set. the glass is a bit heavier than I would have expected, which i think is a good thing. I have used this set not just for storage, but for prep work. Storing cherries, berries, etc. in a glass container looks lovely. I have only had the set for a week or so so I cannot yet comment on the lids. Hopefully they will stand up to the test of time. Only downfall - I wish I had bought the mixed set, the one with rectangular and circular shaped containers. Some items just store better in a rectangle, though it is easier to stir in a circular container. Average Rating:![]() |

Sharp R-305KS 1-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave Oven, StainlessReviewsI have always bought sharp microwaves which have been reliable. This one is not. After 4 months of use, it stops working. It doesn't shut off the power strip. It just stops after less than a minute of being on. It started gradually and now is consistent. In addition, it sounds tinny when I close the door. Very bad. z We bought the Sharp R-305KS microwave in April 2009 for $139 here at Amazon. Since other reviewers had warned that the plastic on the front number panel would quickly wear off, we weren't surprised when ours did so only three months in. While it worked, we were impressed with the heating power (though we never got beyond using 'high' and the timer as all the other controls are not intuitive). Every month or so we found that it wouldn't heat, but then we'd try it again later and things would be okay. This past weekend when we tried using it, the interior light turned on and the carousel rotated, but there was (as others here have described) a louder than usual noise and the microwave didn't heat anything. Have tried it several times since and gotten the same response. We are six weeks beyond the warranty, so suspect we will be junking it (I know there is also an additional warranty period on the magnetron tube part, but that does not include labor or the cost of getting the microwave to and from the service center -- assuming that is indeed the problem). Our first giant GE microwave lasted 14 years. Our second oven, a tiny Sharp Half Pint, lasted 8 years. This one, presumably a step up from the Half Pint in size, power and cost, lasted 14 months. If I'd known that these things were no longer built to last, I would have factored that into determining my price point - and spent less than $139 on it. I had higher expecations and feel let down by Sharp. I'm reluctantly giving this product two stars and not one because, well, it was nice while it lasted -- it just should have lasted longer. I found better priced microwave in other stores after I bought this one.The motor of the microwave is very noisy. I am not happy with this purchase at all. Thanks I purchased this product 6 weeks ago, and the digital read out is already degrading, so forget telling time, reading instructions or using the digital read out for any purpose. It still heats up food, but is a far cry from the durability of GE microwaves I have owned in the past. This is a good microwave. Sleek design, plenty of power, simple controls. It is a big big for a 1 cubic food model. Average Rating:![]() |

This microwave may be mid-sized but that doesn't stop it from being a cooking powerhouse. 6 cook options, 6 reheat options, and 4 defrost options make it a real performer for today's busy lifestyles. |

Umbra Metalla Waste CansReviewsyes it's plastic but matches brushed bronze finish throughout the bathroom. Unfortunately it's too big and would not fit between the vanity and toilet. For some reason it seems a lot bigger than 3 gallon size, perhaps i should have measured the volume but its already been returned. I bought this because it was round, and it's looks. I had a big blue ugly trash can in my bedroom/office and it just looked out of place. So I looked and looked and found this trash can, and I just wanted to put it under my desk for simple things like plastic, paper, bottles, stuff like that. No food or anything becasue it's open and I didn't plan on using a trash bag for it either. It is plastic, but it is pretty well made, looks really nice! Very Shinny! All in all, I think it's a great garbage can! I got one of these for our bedroom, and was so pleased with it I just ordered another one. It's the perfect size (not too small). Yes it is plastic, but it has a nice metallic finish to it. The furniture in our room is a deep brown, and this goes great with it. This was a great find. I was a little disappointed in this trash can that we purchased to complement our bath set: Croscill Cheshire 4-Piece Bath Set, Bronze. First, it is not rigid and easily changes shape. Second, it's clearly plastic - "Metalla" although spelled like "Metal" is about the furthest thing from it. Third, the photo is a little deceiving as the can is bronze with dark highlights, while our other fixtures and accessories are the opposite (so it's more gold than dark). However, it does have some redeeming qualities that saved it from 2-stars or fewer. The trash can we wanted was over $40 on Amazon, so for the same price I can get three of these and not feel bad about throwing them out as they are bio-degradable. Also, this one is twice the size so I can use real trash bags and don't have to empty it as often. It could get four stars if they made the material or structure more rigid - it may still not look like metal, but at least it would feel solid. ordered this item for our newly remodeled bathroom. It looks great, nicely made and arrived as scheduled. would buy from this seller again. Average Rating:![]() |

iTouchless 3-Layer Portable Electric Power Bug, Fly, Mosquito, Spider Swatter/ZapperReviewsNot the safest item. If you touch the center you can get a shock. Nonetheless, my husband, and all men who have seen it, love it, as they bat away at bugs. Kind of tennis on the patio. Kills bugs effectively. iTouchless 3=layer portable electric power bug fly swatrer It will kill a mosquito if you hit it right - but there is no 'zap'... This bug zapper's 2 "insulation layers" supposedly serve to protect you, but they also trap the bug in the layers so that even after it's dead the body is stuck and still sparking. I don't know about you, but I do not want to have to pick the little fried husk out of the layers so I can continue using it. Tapping it on the floor or garbage can to dislodge the body left my zapper dead. I also used the zapper without the "insulation layers" and never once accidentally shocked myself so I am going back to using it. Bugs beware! Is it wrong to imagine a little voice screaming as the sparks fly? Nevermind. I love these zappers, they work on most small flying bugs, even "fruit flies"!!! I use rechargeable batteries and they last months. I bought them for gifts for all my family. I now have one in every room of my house to rid it of ALL the pests all year round. I'm very happy with this product. There were many versions to pick from but this is solidly made, and 3 screens make it high quality. Very effective. Average Rating:![]() |

100 Rack Sack Refill Bags - 3 or 5 Gallon by Extrufix - NEW MODEL!ReviewsI love the rack sack holder and trash bags. They fit perfect in my small kitchen. I appreciate that I can procure the Rack Sack refill bags through Amazon. We used to buy them at Bed Bath and Beyond and they no longer carry them. Thank you. I have been struggling for years with the larger, folded replacement bags falling out and getting caught in the door. I tried other manufacturer's bags and nothing worked like the original 3 gallon roll bags. I used to love the rack sack until they quit offering the small bags. Now I replaced it with an equivalent item from IKEA. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a convenient under sink door mounted trash. Really delighted to find the refills...have been using the system for years-actually ordered a whole box of them when Container Store still stocked them...was out and checked on Amazon and found the new ones....ta da ! most happy ! I always buy these on amazon they are hard to find in a store. I love rack sack it keeps my bad dog out of trash. Average Rating:![]() |

Drobo S 5-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800/eSATA Storage Array DRDR3A21ReviewsThe product had two issues. Small one is that the 16TB volume default setup for Vista would not work. I had to use XP Mode with 3x 2TB volumes. Big one is that the eSATA connection continues to fail and cause painful crashes in the programs I was running. I even purchased additional eSATA card to match exactly what the vender recommended. While using USB the product did appear to function well enough, but I feel that I paid for eSATA speed, not USB. All my problems where with Vista x64 SP2 on a Laptop using a ExpressCard/34 for the eSATA connection. Others on the web reported similar problems with other Drobo models. I would not consider buying a Drobo for use with Windows, until these problems have clearly been addressed. I am an IT professional with over 20 years of experience working with storage systems ranging from mini frame computers to the latest iSCSI based systems. This device is NOT the fastest ever storage device. Far from it. What it is, however, is a very elegant storage system designed for the average home or SOHO user who needs a large RAID based storage system that can be expanded on the fly using any drives they happen to have laying around. There is no other storage device (in this price range) that has that ability. If you are comfortable moving all of your data off of your storage device, breaking the RAID set, installing new drives, repartitioning the RAID set, reformatting the RAID set, and then moving all of your data back because you need more space then by all means choose one of the many available RAID based enclosures on the market that are less expensive. If you are not comfortable with this scenario then the Drobo is exactly the device you need. The simple reason that this device underperforms compared to those devices is purely based on the calculations required by the BeyondRAID technology built into this device. Drobo have tried to address this performance gap with the Drobo S by incorporating a faster processor. This does help greatly and the Drobo S is faster than the standard Drobo over all of it's interfaces. In order to justify the price gap over the standard Drobo they have added an extra drive bay (5 in the S), the eSATA port, and the ability to survive from 2 drives failing simultaneously. Having said all of that the performance over FireWire 800 is not bad. I am using 5 Western Digital Green 1TB drives in it (which run very cool) and am seeing 70 MB/s on reads and 50MB/s writes. These drives average out at about 75 MB/s for both reads and writes in most independent tests I have seen. That means my read speeds are almost at the drives maximum. Obviously the writes are quit a bit slower, but RAID write performance is almost always slower due to the calculations required. Bottom-line is that this device does exactly what it is expected to do. Provide the end user with a painless external storage device that can survive one or two drive failures and expand on the fly to accommodate your ever increasing storage needs. The trade off for that simplicity is a "slight" performance penalty over some plain vanilla RAID enclosure. Drobo S works great. I use it for large video files and it is fast enough to play them with out any problem. I had purchased a Drobo storage device last year and I was not so satisfied by it's performance (I have experienced sudden reboots of my PC when moving big files). For this year I needed to upgrade my storage capacity and I performed my survey for alternatives to Drobo devices. From my survey I found that the best one is still the Drobo (in terms of pricing and technical characteristics). I purchased the Drobo S and I have installed 5 disks of 2T capacity. Plugging the Drobo was easy. The good thing is that when installing the new drivers I have stopped experiencing the problems I have encountered with the previous version. Also the USB and Firewire copy are faster! As a customer I feel very satisfied with the product. My problems solved, my performance is better and I have reliable data storage to protect my files. Highly recommended! Now a lot of people don't use the Drobo S with the right drives or chipset (IE the eSATA). A few spec to lay down the ground work for this review. Asus P5E Workstation PRO Intel Core 2 Quad 9550S Corsiar 1600mhz DDR2 8GB Silicon Image SiI3132 PCI-E 1x Twin eSATA Drives in Drobo S - Western Digital Black 1TB Pros: I doesn't use the USB port or the Fire800. On average I get between 72 MB/S and 92 MB/S write on the eSATA port. Now the Drobo will take any Brand and size of hard drive, but I think Western Digital Black give that extra edge to help keep the speed up. Hoping that this next feature will be a Pro soon, currently you have to switch to the USB port for firmware updates. Soon Data Robotics hopes to have the eSATA port available for this task as well. Cons: The Drobo Dashboard software is nice, but it lacks something. First it doesn't report the true space and size of the Drobo to the OS. The Drobo will slow down between 85% and 100% of being full, I think this for users that doesn't see the little blue lights on the front or doesn't have the dashboard software installed. The Hard Drives in the Drobo do get a little hot for my preference. Most of my drives set in the 20-30c temperature(Thermaltake IceCage 120mm Fan). Average Rating:![]() |

Western Digital WDA4NC80000N ShareSpace 8 TB 4-bay Network Attached Storage Gigabit Ethernet (RAID 0/1/5)ReviewsI purchased this NAS after reading a few reviews and it seemed to be one of the better value for money NAS's on the market, however it has extremely poor read/write speeds and can only support 32 users in Active Directory (Including disabled accounts) You also must have a Windows 2003 Active Directory forrest and schema so not much good if you have 32 or more user accounts. WD Recomendations: Domain Name does not exceed 15 characters (Example: [...]) 2003 Active Directory (By default Windows 2003 creates a Windows 2000 Active Directory) 2003 Forest (By default Windows 2003 creates a Windows 2000 Forest) Domain Users are stored in the default "Users" directory that Active Directory creates Domain Computers are stored in the default "Computers" directory that Active Directory creates Domain should have 32 Active Directory users or less I have since sent this unit back and replaced with a Synology Diskstation DS410 I bought the 2 TB Sharespace system and had it hooked up in no time at all. It's a good thing that Windows 7 has XP compatibility software built in or this wouldn't work with Windows 7. I still havent gotten the hang of the downloading the files from the internet as the MIONET service provided is a little complicated at first, but easy to grasp as you pay attention to what you are doing. As I read in some of the other reviews the 4-8TB system is anywhere from $600-$999. I bought the 2TB on sale at $294 here on amazon and purchased 2x 2TB WD HDD ($99 each) that just slide right in and now i have a 6 TB sharespace for under $500. It also let me plug in my 2x 1TB WD MY Book Externals that I already had and i can access them as if it were apart of the sharespace. Now thats 8TB's I dont know what im going to do with it all. Cons: The data transfer rate is a little on the slow side. Beware - This NAS advertises itself as offering UPS graceful shutdown, but only a small number of UPS devices are supported. (Search google for WD Knowledge Base 2559) Of these, the Tripp Lite Internet350U did not work and only showed up as a "Generic UPS", without battery life remaining and any ability to do a graceful shutdown. Furthermore the Firmware version on my Sharespace was more recent than the one available on their support website, which confused the tech support, and made the firmware un-upgradable. Tech support was a waste of time and finally told me they don't support UPS issues, even after recommending them on their knowledge base. Steer clear of this one. This NAS is simple to use via the web interface and gets good throughput with the gigabit interface. Setting up permissions is straight forward and log entries are useful when troubleshooting. Unfortunately the device is NOT reliable. I had it configured in a RAID5 configuration with 4 (1TB) disks and my office experienced a power outage that lasted longer than the backup power supply (UPS) I was using. When I powered the NAS back on it was reachable on the network (via web interface) but it would not recognize my user ID and password and therefore could not access my files (even the ones in the public folder). I contacted WD and they recommended using the reset button located on the back of the unit to reset accounts back to factory default. After doing this the unit no longer booted up successfully and I was not able to access any files. They then told me there was nothing else they could do and offered to RMA a new unit to me. I spent 3 weeks trying to recover my RAID5 array using R-Studio to no avail. The WD technical support was also not able to answer questions (stripe size, boot sequence, etc) on the RAID5 setup which made it impossible to recover my data. I was really disappointed with the quality of their technical support and to see that a power outage would cause the entire unit to fail in a RAID5 configuration. Got my new 8TB ShareSpace. Configured it for Raid 5. Setup was somewhat confusing. It's difficult to figure out where to go turn features on/off, but eventually I got used to it. Copied a 500 GB of data to it. It seemed to be working fine. Then one morning, one week after purchase, it was off. When I turned it back on, it reported 2 bad drives. I spent an hour on the phone with the worst tech support ever giving me idiotic suggestions like rebooting my PC to see if the drives somehow come back. Bottom line: WD will replace the bad drives, but my data is gone and they don't care. They have no way to get it back. So now I have to use a third-party company that will charge me between $1000-$3000 to get my data back. This wouldn't bother me so much if this was just a "normal" hard drive. But this is supposed to be a high-end "safe" place to store lots of data. I would hope that WD would stand behind its product. But they seem to consider this to be just another drive. If it fails, it fails. Average Rating:![]() |

Digital Foci PST-251 250GB Photo Safe II Digital Picture Storage (Blue/White)ReviewsI actually had two of these and both were inoperable. The fist one had the pins (that insert into the flash card) badly misaligned making it useless. I returned it to the nice folks at Amazon and was promptly sent another. It simply wouldn't load, so I returned it also and received the requested refund on my credit card. I really appreciate Amazon's willingness to rectify promptly a situation like this, and I have literally spent thousands of dollars with them since this incident. DO buy from Amazon.com - just DON'T buy this worthless piece of you-know-what. RJ This is a great, niche, consumer-grade product. It's perfect for me, though I don't recommend it for professionals. If your photos are your livelihood, bite the bullet and spend $1,000 on an Epson or Canon photo drive. For the rest of us, the PhotoSafe does the job, and won't break the bank. I bought this device so I would not have to bring a laptop on vacation with me. I take a lot of photos, but also shoot a lot of video, which fills up my SD cards fast. The PhotoSafe allowed me to empty my cards while traveling and leave my laptop at home. I have only filled a fraction of the 250 GB of space at a time, but so far it has worked flawlessly. With only two buttons, it's simply to use: Hold down the left button to turn it on, slide in the memory card, and when it blinks "COPY" press the EXE button on the right to copy. The screen shows you in percentages how the copying is going. When it's finished, pull out the card, or press the power button again to change it to "DELETE" mode, press EXE, and empty the card. I use a 17" MacBookPro, and plugging the PhotoSafe in with the supplied USB cable makes it pop up on the desktop like any other volume. Navigate through a couple of folders, and you'll find all your photos/video stored by folder according to the order they were copied. Just drag and drop, or import directly into iPhoto. When you're done, trash them like you would any other file, empty the trash, you're ready to go again. The backlight is very bright, and for small batches the drive is quick. Larger batches take longer. A full, 4GB SD card takes about 10-15 minutes to empty, which brings the battery from 3 bars to 1. I have not taxed the drive by filling it or forcing it to copy huge (8GB+) cards at a time. But for my purposes, it works great. There is no formatting to do and no drivers to install for Leopard. I only use SD cards, so I have not had the problems with bending the pins that others have experienced. However, I do suggest sliding the cards in GENTLY. There should be relatively little resistance. Pros: * Small, light * Inexpensive * Huge capacity * Bright backlit display * Battery allows you to do limited copying on the go * All cables/adapters included * Mounts easily as a volume * True plug and play on Mac OSX * Works with lots of card formats Cons: * Lots of openings for sand/water/grit * Needs a delicate hand to insert cards * Battery is only good for about 15-20 minutes of continuous work The best formula is to purchase this drive along with a couple decent capacity memory cards. I filled my cards during the day, and then emptied them each night. All my photos and video made it home safe and sound. I purchased this item and have since filled out a return slip for it. It does what it says it will do, copy files. I am a wedding photographer and I hire other photographers as back-ups so I need a fast way to copy their images before they take off for the night. I tried out a full 8GB CF card and no joke it took 24 minutes! That is unacceptable in my world. If you aren't in any hurry to back up images than this machine is for you. Great price for the space but obviously not paying for speed. Its an amazing solution for anyone that takes a lot of pictures during extended trips and doesn't want to invest in extra memory media! This little gadget saved me during my trip to South Africa: World cup & safari. I was able to take pictures everyday and download them to this portable drive while I re-used the memory card. I'm not giving this device a 5-star for the following reasons: - Once the files are downloaded there is no real way to verify everything was copied successfully, specially if you walk away from the device while its copying and come back by the time its done... it will auto-shut off after being idle for a few minutes so you'll be left wondering if the copy was successful or not!! - The battery will only last you to download 1 x 16GB card and it needs to be fully charged, so the battery life is quite poor considering that its good for 1 download. I had it plugged into a power outlet most of the time. - I don't know if anyone else has the same issue but you need to power up the device on battery, insert the memory card and then plug in the power outlet if you want to download your pictures without having to worry about battery power. I can't download images to the drive if its directly plugged into the power outlet!!! This is just something that made me panic but it was a false alarm... I thought I'd put it out there in case someone has the same issue. Having said all of this, I would highly recommend this type of solution rather than more memory media... specially if you plan on switching from 1 type to another like I will in the next few months! I have no idea if this piece of equipment works. I have had four different people attempt to remove the battery door to place the battery in the product. No one has been able to remove the door, and I questioned my own hand eye coordination. Online support was not useful, and the 800 number utilizes banking hours. I did some research online, and found that I am not the only individual unable to open the battery door. Others exerted so much pressure, that they snapped the battery door. Another broke the clips holding the door in place, so now the door continually falls off. If the company is unable to design the simplest element effectively, I have no confidence in the overall product. I am returning the product, which is very frustrating. Average Rating:![]() |
