Norpro Grip EZ Stainless Steel Compost KeeperReviewsThis item is a good size and looks fine. But that's about all I can say good about it. The filter makes it smell like dead fish! After only one use! You might as well buy any air tight kitchen anister and use it the same way. If you don't want smell, you have to empty it every day. But even after washing it out with soapy water, it still stinks because the filter retains the fish-like smell even when it's practically new. Waste of $$. buy any old container to use for food waste! It's just perfect! Holds a ton of compostable kitchen waste, easy to clean, attractive and the filter really blocks odors. I'd buy it again in a minute. Just sorry that a waited so long to "splurge". I have used the Norpro Grip EZ compost keeper for about two weeks. So far it has performed well. The cannister is attractive enough that I don't mind if it is left out on the kitchen counter. I have left kitchen waste in the cannister for up to three days before putting it into the compost bin and I have detected no odors at all. This is a very good alternative to a pail under the sink! If I had to rate this on my own, I'd give it four stars. My wife would give it two, which was not unexpected. Depending on your needs, our issues might not be issues for you, but size and shape are the big limitations. Oval shaped containers allow you to hold dinner plates over the opening and scrape a plate clean. This one's smaller round opening can make for a potential messier situation unless you are more diligent. I didn't expect any similar item to be able to hold everything compostable such as grease stained pizza boxes, but it would have been nicer not to need to empty this every day or two. For a family of five that composts (or has the city do it for us) whatever we can, it would be nice to have something bigger. But overall, it's nice to have something that looks like it belongs on the counter, and looks good overall. Unfortunately, it keeps getting filled up all the way to the filter. I've never been able to find a perfect solution, and this was good enough that I was able to sway the household vote toward keeping it. Back in our early days of composting, when the city first started giving subsidized compost/worm bins, this might have been handy and large enough since we did not compost rotting fruits, meats or anything that attracted flies. When the city introduced curb side food waste recycling, they gave us a smallish plastic pail to use on a day-to-day basis and then empty into the larger green bin for pickup. Their free plastic one was a better shape than this, but a big mess. This one is easy to clean, (if you've cleaned stainless pots and pans, you know it's relatively easy, plus nothing gets baked on this so it's even easier) keeps odors out, and closes better than the one the city gave us. The free one didn't last more than a few months before we got sick of it. A large paper bag was a better fit for volume, but a bad way to prevent fruit flies. Experience has shown me that the more you can reclaim, the more you will find there is to reclaim, but if the size were adequate, then the shape would be my only misgiving. Overall, there's nothing on the market that I can find that I like better, and I still think it deserves four stars even though I am the one who has to empty it. This countertop compost keeper is sleek-looking and definitely odor-free to the human nose. I was enjoying it immensely until I started seeing fruit flies in my kitchen. It takes us a couple of weeks to fill the compost keeper and during that time hundreds and hundreds of fruit flies had made it their home. I was so disgusted, I through the whole thing in the garbage. Average Rating:![]() |

Pyrex Storage 14-Piece Round Set, Clear with Blue LidsReviewsI recently ordered these, and am generally pleased with them. However, the box description claims that these bowls nest, but do that at your own risk. I nested two of the 2-cup size together, they got wedged, I tried gently to get them apart and some shards of glass chipped off the lip of one of them even with just gentle pressure. Pyrex customer service was extremely helpful and shipped out two replacement bowls right away. The rep said that they recommend stacking with the lids on (of course, the word "nest" on their box implies that you don't need to do this), which is what I'll do from now on. So, I still recommend the product, just don't try to nest bowls of the same size together. I love Pyrex everything! We are trying to get away from the use of so much plastic and disposables, so I purchased this set for home storage and for carrying our lunch to work. These are great! The lids seal tightly and we've had no leaks. I would advise against stacking these together though: I did have two get stuck and one of them chipped slightly getting them apart. I store them with the lids on to prevent this from happening again. I also love that these are American Made! I will be purchasing more sets of these. Pyrex is absolutely great. I got these on super sale.....but I would have definitely paid more. The lids seal very tight and will even hold in liquids which is great. Have gone through the dishwasher a few times now and there is no apparent wear at all. Love em and will be buying more in the future. Bought these to avoid heating plastic boxes in the microwave. The containers are of varied sizes to store different quantities of food in. They are very easy to wash. Initially the lids were a tad too tight. But with a few uses the fit has improved. I love this set. the glass is a bit heavier than I would have expected, which i think is a good thing. I have used this set not just for storage, but for prep work. Storing cherries, berries, etc. in a glass container looks lovely. I have only had the set for a week or so so I cannot yet comment on the lids. Hopefully they will stand up to the test of time. Only downfall - I wish I had bought the mixed set, the one with rectangular and circular shaped containers. Some items just store better in a rectangle, though it is easier to stir in a circular container. Average Rating:![]() |

Sharp R-305KS 1-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave Oven, StainlessReviewsI have always bought sharp microwaves which have been reliable. This one is not. After 4 months of use, it stops working. It doesn't shut off the power strip. It just stops after less than a minute of being on. It started gradually and now is consistent. In addition, it sounds tinny when I close the door. Very bad. z We bought the Sharp R-305KS microwave in April 2009 for $139 here at Amazon. Since other reviewers had warned that the plastic on the front number panel would quickly wear off, we weren't surprised when ours did so only three months in. While it worked, we were impressed with the heating power (though we never got beyond using 'high' and the timer as all the other controls are not intuitive). Every month or so we found that it wouldn't heat, but then we'd try it again later and things would be okay. This past weekend when we tried using it, the interior light turned on and the carousel rotated, but there was (as others here have described) a louder than usual noise and the microwave didn't heat anything. Have tried it several times since and gotten the same response. We are six weeks beyond the warranty, so suspect we will be junking it (I know there is also an additional warranty period on the magnetron tube part, but that does not include labor or the cost of getting the microwave to and from the service center -- assuming that is indeed the problem). Our first giant GE microwave lasted 14 years. Our second oven, a tiny Sharp Half Pint, lasted 8 years. This one, presumably a step up from the Half Pint in size, power and cost, lasted 14 months. If I'd known that these things were no longer built to last, I would have factored that into determining my price point - and spent less than $139 on it. I had higher expecations and feel let down by Sharp. I'm reluctantly giving this product two stars and not one because, well, it was nice while it lasted -- it just should have lasted longer. I found better priced microwave in other stores after I bought this one.The motor of the microwave is very noisy. I am not happy with this purchase at all. Thanks I purchased this product 6 weeks ago, and the digital read out is already degrading, so forget telling time, reading instructions or using the digital read out for any purpose. It still heats up food, but is a far cry from the durability of GE microwaves I have owned in the past. This is a good microwave. Sleek design, plenty of power, simple controls. It is a big big for a 1 cubic food model. Average Rating:![]() |

Whitmor Over-The-Door Shoe Rack, White, 36-PairReviewsI read a lot of the reviews which seemed to go love or hate this product. It arrived very quickly, assembly was very quick (under 15 minutes), no problems with ill fitting dowels... I would recommend using a rubber mallet to make sure that each dowel is securely in place (perhaps this is why some complained that it fell apart). My shoes are organized and off the floor and out of sight, which is exactly why I purchased the rack. I'm hopeful that it will hold up (the material is not superior, but appears to be durable). I have 30+ pair of shoes on there now and it's holding them nicely! This shoe rack has a curved frame, not terribly evident from the picture, that makes it too deep for the closet door I intended to hang it on. A much better design would have the frame flush against the door for maximum clearance. I am so happy to no longer have a "mountain of shoes" that I have to go "mining" through every morning! I've tried several shoe organization systems that were more hassle than help. This one is nearly a miracle. The assembly was easy to do, but it did require a bit of strategy. Here are some tips that might be helpful: 1) a carpeted floor will not constitute a "flat hard surface" - a hard floor is a must; 2) while no tools are required, a rubber mallet would be helpful (or the sole of a running shoe!) to save discomfort to your hand when popping the poles into place; 3) for the last step, rather than putting the over-the-door brackets over the door and then trying to line the unit up with them, attach them to the unit and then lift it to the door; 4) a second pair of hands would be helpful, although not necessary, as the unit is long and getting the first section assembled takes some maneuvering. As another reviewer noted, the unit will hold more than 36 pairs of shoes if you have a lot of flip-flops or other flat sandals. Simply slide one shoe into its mate, heel to toe, to double the available storage space. This is a well built rack that holds a good number of shoes. Each can be seen for easy assess. The only problem is that it is very wide and when open (holding shoes) doors can not be opened totally. It would not fit on my closet door at all. I had to put it on the back of a door leading into a room not frequently used. This way when the door needs to be opened, you can open it (less then half way) and enter. This would not work for the normal household due to this fact. One does not realize that opened the depth is a barrier to opening the door it is hanging on. Everything looked the way thati expected however the door attachments were 1/4" too small and wouldn't fit on the door. Now I have a shoe rack I want to use but can't. I would rate 5 if they provided a larger door attachment. Average Rating:![]() |

ExtraLife Produce Preserver Disks - Set of 3ReviewsThis is great,It really makes food last alot longer. When i bought like strawberries before they would go bad in about 3 days they will last at least a week with the extra life. LOVE IT I bought one as a lark, and because I'm a fool for anything 'new'. Lo and behold, the bloody thing works--and not only works, it saves produce for so long they pay for themselves. Put one in those boxes of lettuce you get from the store and forget to use all of--the lettuce lasted longer than marked on the lid, by weeks. So truly, try one at least. Take a permanent marker and mark it when opened with date, it will save you money and today--produce is costly enough that I need to take extra care. This product does what it says in preserving fruits and veggies. I have been using it for a couple of years and I have saved money because stuff lasts longer in the frig. This product quite simply works as advertised. It's not a gimick, it really works. I've been using them for years and the rare time that they expire or I forget to reorder in time I notice a huge difference in how quickly my produce goes bad. These save huge money by allowing our busy family more time to consume our healthy fruits and veggies before they go bad. Akro Mils 44 Drawer Cabinet - 10744 - Red and GrayReviewsHi all, This product is made great, and you will be happy with Akro Mils. Enjoy, Thomas For those who were wondering: the actual product dimensions are 20"x15"x6.25". I bought this to organize my screws and such in the garage. It is great in that it has a lot of drawers and comes with some dividers (for both the large and small drawers-- I'm not sure why another reviewer said there weren't large dividers). There aren't many dividers, though, so if you anticipate needing lots you'll have to buy some. The whole box is made of medium duty plastic, which is what I expected for the price. However, I gave it four stars rather than five because it isn't very well designed for free standing use. The dividers make up most of the back, so if you remove them you lose structural integrity and, I imagine, will have a bowed frame in no time if you put anything weighty in it. I plan to hang it on the wall, which I think will help to prevent bowing, but I'll be sure to update after it's been up for a while! Organizer is perfect for my large jewelry collection. Clear drawers allow me to see everything. Comes with hardware to hang, but I would suggest buying something more heavy duty at the store. Good buy for low cost. Sturdy storage unit. Lots of drawers--large and small. Fits perfect on garage shelf. The cabinet is everything I needed it to be. A few of the plastic tabs that prevent the draws from falling out when all the way out broke off in shipping. No big deal though, everything is working how it should and is already in use mounted on my wall. Average Rating:![]() |

Drobo S 5-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800/eSATA Storage Array DRDR3A21ReviewsThe product had two issues. Small one is that the 16TB volume default setup for Vista would not work. I had to use XP Mode with 3x 2TB volumes. Big one is that the eSATA connection continues to fail and cause painful crashes in the programs I was running. I even purchased additional eSATA card to match exactly what the vender recommended. While using USB the product did appear to function well enough, but I feel that I paid for eSATA speed, not USB. All my problems where with Vista x64 SP2 on a Laptop using a ExpressCard/34 for the eSATA connection. Others on the web reported similar problems with other Drobo models. I would not consider buying a Drobo for use with Windows, until these problems have clearly been addressed. I am an IT professional with over 20 years of experience working with storage systems ranging from mini frame computers to the latest iSCSI based systems. This device is NOT the fastest ever storage device. Far from it. What it is, however, is a very elegant storage system designed for the average home or SOHO user who needs a large RAID based storage system that can be expanded on the fly using any drives they happen to have laying around. There is no other storage device (in this price range) that has that ability. If you are comfortable moving all of your data off of your storage device, breaking the RAID set, installing new drives, repartitioning the RAID set, reformatting the RAID set, and then moving all of your data back because you need more space then by all means choose one of the many available RAID based enclosures on the market that are less expensive. If you are not comfortable with this scenario then the Drobo is exactly the device you need. The simple reason that this device underperforms compared to those devices is purely based on the calculations required by the BeyondRAID technology built into this device. Drobo have tried to address this performance gap with the Drobo S by incorporating a faster processor. This does help greatly and the Drobo S is faster than the standard Drobo over all of it's interfaces. In order to justify the price gap over the standard Drobo they have added an extra drive bay (5 in the S), the eSATA port, and the ability to survive from 2 drives failing simultaneously. Having said all of that the performance over FireWire 800 is not bad. I am using 5 Western Digital Green 1TB drives in it (which run very cool) and am seeing 70 MB/s on reads and 50MB/s writes. These drives average out at about 75 MB/s for both reads and writes in most independent tests I have seen. That means my read speeds are almost at the drives maximum. Obviously the writes are quit a bit slower, but RAID write performance is almost always slower due to the calculations required. Bottom-line is that this device does exactly what it is expected to do. Provide the end user with a painless external storage device that can survive one or two drive failures and expand on the fly to accommodate your ever increasing storage needs. The trade off for that simplicity is a "slight" performance penalty over some plain vanilla RAID enclosure. Drobo S works great. I use it for large video files and it is fast enough to play them with out any problem. I had purchased a Drobo storage device last year and I was not so satisfied by it's performance (I have experienced sudden reboots of my PC when moving big files). For this year I needed to upgrade my storage capacity and I performed my survey for alternatives to Drobo devices. From my survey I found that the best one is still the Drobo (in terms of pricing and technical characteristics). I purchased the Drobo S and I have installed 5 disks of 2T capacity. Plugging the Drobo was easy. The good thing is that when installing the new drivers I have stopped experiencing the problems I have encountered with the previous version. Also the USB and Firewire copy are faster! As a customer I feel very satisfied with the product. My problems solved, my performance is better and I have reliable data storage to protect my files. Highly recommended! Now a lot of people don't use the Drobo S with the right drives or chipset (IE the eSATA). A few spec to lay down the ground work for this review. Asus P5E Workstation PRO Intel Core 2 Quad 9550S Corsiar 1600mhz DDR2 8GB Silicon Image SiI3132 PCI-E 1x Twin eSATA Drives in Drobo S - Western Digital Black 1TB Pros: I doesn't use the USB port or the Fire800. On average I get between 72 MB/S and 92 MB/S write on the eSATA port. Now the Drobo will take any Brand and size of hard drive, but I think Western Digital Black give that extra edge to help keep the speed up. Hoping that this next feature will be a Pro soon, currently you have to switch to the USB port for firmware updates. Soon Data Robotics hopes to have the eSATA port available for this task as well. Cons: The Drobo Dashboard software is nice, but it lacks something. First it doesn't report the true space and size of the Drobo to the OS. The Drobo will slow down between 85% and 100% of being full, I think this for users that doesn't see the little blue lights on the front or doesn't have the dashboard software installed. The Hard Drives in the Drobo do get a little hot for my preference. Most of my drives set in the 20-30c temperature(Thermaltake IceCage 120mm Fan). Average Rating:![]() |
